Mr. Michael Weil, BME
Sweat drops falling 30-plus feet to the ground while installing and fine-tuning theatrical lighting;
Live-mapping the four-dimensional architecture of the world a music score must inhabit for its wordless narrative to lift the spirit;
Constantly rediscovering with fresh wonder the play of light in and through God’s creation that can make any moment both familiar and strange;
Sounding the iceberg-depths of human experience to bring inimitable curves to the form of a character and an unmistakable flicker of flame to its eye;
These are a few of the places Mr. Weil’s creative and educational journey have taken him so far, places that require, at least at first, an expert guide. Mr. Weil grew up blessed by teachers and directors in his life who noticed his creative sparks and guided him with their love of learning and artistic endeavor while always keeping
Christ the utmost importance. From his preschool teacher who played songs about Jesus on the piano and allowed him to figure them out by ear, to his high school art teacher who bought one of his paintings to display for the school, to his college theater directors who allowed him to act in and design lights for a world-premiere show about Christ’s light in a dark and fallen world, these teaching artists created along with their students and turned sparks into flames that light the way for others.
Mr. Weil began his career at Concordia in 2013, taking over the music department from the legendary Dr. Achterberg and co-founded the musical at Concordia in 2014 with Mr. Schatte. The incomparable Mrs. Weil has helped choreograph since 2015. In 2018, Mr. Weil began teaching Drama and directing the theatrical productions at Concordia. In order to balance this with taking care of a newborn, Concordia hired Artha Weaver to take over Band and she has done a phenomenal job with the music department since. Mr. Weil has also taught classes in art, film, debate, creative writing, technical theatre, and independent study fiber arts while at Concordia. For someone who loves to learn and be challenged to grow in that learning, Mr. Weil has directed on three campuses, seen the building of our first stage, and has found a wonderful calling here.
Mr. Weil enjoys connecting with students and helping them recognize talents they may not have believed they possess and encouraging them to stretch their limits to grow both as an artist and as a Child of God. Mr. Weil believes that creative and artistic pursuits are given to us by God not as something extra, reserved for the extremely talented outliers, but as an essential component to who we are as humans. Mr. Weil’s goal is to kindle those creative sparks all of our students have into healthy flames that can illuminate their relationship with God and with others. Soli Deo Gloria.
